Schools Recognised for Putting Value into Volunteering

Somervale and Norton Hill schools have recently been recognised by the South West Office of the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme for putting value into volunteering. Headteachers Jo Postlethwaite and Gordon Green received certificates which showed their students have undertaken nearly £12,000 worth of volunteering activities in the local community over the last year.

Ms Postlethwaite said “When people think about the Duke of Edinburgh Award, the sight of groups of young people in waterproofs carrying large rucksacks is what invariably springs to mind. In fact, the award is much broader than this and a vitally important aspect is to undertake volunteering in the local community. It develops social responsibility and I am delighted that our students’ endeavours have been recognised in this way”.
